Meditating and Praying in the Word

Peter Hindley, Thursday 20 November 2008 - 22:03:47

1. The value of these activities

  a. The basis of the christian faith is that we can know and have fellowship with God Himself.
( 1 John 1 v1-3 ... that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, so
that you may have fellowship with us. And truly our fellowship is with the
Father and with His son Jesus Christ.)

  b. Through meditating and dialoging with God on what He has said in His Word
      - we develop our relationship with Him and get to know Him

( Philippians 3: 8-10 :but no, rather, I count all things to be loss for the
excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my LORD...........that i may
know Him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings.)

  c. We strengthen our hearts against sin.

( Psalm 119:9 (BETH) ..with what shall a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to your word.10 With all my heart I have
sought You:do not let me wander  from Your commandments.
         11. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against
          You.)

  d. Hunger and thirst for God lead us to seeking Him through His word.

( Psalm 119:v25 My souls clings to the dust; give me life according to
         Your word.)
( Luke 4:4  Jesus answered him saying, " man shall not live by bread
alone but by every word  of God."' )

2. How we practice meditation and prayer in the word

  a. Select a scripture that the Holy Spirit is highlighting to you.

eg. Psalm 27v4 ...one thing I have desired from Jehovah, that i may dwell in the house
of Jehovah all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of Jehovah and to pray in
         His temple.

  b. Read it through several times.

  c. Examine its meaning and context.

  d. Break it down into its "sense groups".

" One thing I have desired from Jehovah......"

" that I may dwell in the house of Jehovah....."

" all the days of my life........"

"  to behold the beauty of Jehovah..."

"  and to pray in His Temple......"

  e. Take each group and say it out loud, emphasising the different key words in it.

..one thing I have desired from Jehovah

..one thing I have desired from Jehovah..

..one thing I have desired from Jehovah

..one thing I have desired from Jehovah

   f. Turn it into a personal prayer.

.. there's one thing i really want from you Lord ......etc

   g. Sing the prayer to the LORD.
" To sing is to pray twice "... Augustine
